In 1929 an idea was formed and initiated to gather together a group of legal secretaries in order to learn what was required in the preparation and filing of legal documents. This idea blossomed and spread throughout the state of California, and in 1940, Legal Secretaries, Incorporated (also known as LSI®) was formed as a nonprofit mutual benefit corporation. In the new millennium, LSI® continues to grow by serving legal secretaries as well as law office support staff throughout the state of California with a variety of programs and services:

Education
Our Legal Procedures Chairman keeps you informed of all changes in forms, procedures, and court rules which affect us as legal professionals.
Our Program Chairman makes sure that we have speakers at our monthly meetings who will inform and delight you with information that affects your job and life.
CCLS
LAVLPA supports the California Certified Legal Secretary certification program. A study course is available for those who wish to sit for the one-day exam, which is given semi-annually. The CCLS exam tests California legal procedure, terminology, ethics, administrative, bookkeeping, communication, and performance skills.
Legal Specialization Workshops
Workshops are held quarterly at LSI conferences in the following fields: Criminal Law, Family Law, Law Office Administration, Litigation, Probate/Estate Planning and Transactional Law.
BALSF
Bay Area Legal Secretaries Forum (BALSF) holds four educational workshops each year. As a member you are entitled to a 10% discount.
Publications
Membership includes a yearly subscription to The Legal Secretary, LSI’s quarterly publication. The publication includes articles on various legal topics as well as information regarding upcoming LSI conferences, Legal Specialization workshops and chapter events.
Members of LAVLPA receive advance notice of all LSI publications, and a discounted price on the Legal Professional’s Handbook and the Law Office Procedures Manual.
Law and Notions, LAVLPA’s monthly newsletter provides information regarding monthly meetings (dinner/speaker) upcoming LSI events, changes in the law, interclub events, employment opportunities and much more.
Membership Dues
Annual memberships dues are $45 each year. ($25 to LAVLPA and $20 to LSI). Dues are payable no later than May 31st of each year with a late payment of $5 after June 1.
Many of our members have their dues paid by their employers (as well as the monthly dinners) as your membership in our association is a benefit to them and a business expense.
How Do You Join
Any member of our Association should be able to answer questions you might have about LAVLPA. If you do not know someone who is a member, our Membership Chairman will be glad to answer your questions and act as your sponsor once you have qualified.
